What the Student Visa (Subclass 500) Allows

The subclass 500 lets you study full-time in a CRICOS-registered course anywhere in Australia. Depending on your course length, the visa is usually granted for the duration of study plus a short additional period (e.g., 1–2 months after completion for shorter courses, longer for degrees).

Key benefits include:

• Part-time work rights (up to 48 hours per fortnight during study terms; unlimited during official course breaks)
• Ability to include eligible family members (partner/children) as dependants
• Pathways to post-study work visas (Temporary Graduate Visa subclass 485) and, for some, eventual permanent residency options

Core Requirements for Approval

To succeed, you must satisfy several mandatory criteria:

1. Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)You need a valid CoE from a CRICOS-registered provider. This covers higher education (bachelor, master, PhD), VET courses, ELICOS (English language), or school studies. Adelaide has strong options across all levels — make sure your course aligns with your genuine academic and career goals.
2. Genuine Student (GS) RequirementSince March 2024, the GS test replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) rule. It's not a formal exam — instead, you answer targeted questions in your application and provide a personal statement addressing:
   
   • Why you chose this course and provider
   • How it fits your previous studies and future career plans
   • Your ties to your home country (family, employment, property, community)
   • Your financial situation and how you'll support yourself
   • Any immigration history or previous visa compliance
   • The Department looks for genuine intent to study — not primarily to work or stay long-term. A strong, consistent, and honest statement is crucial.

Financial Capacity

You must show you can cover tuition, living costs, travel, and (if bringing family) dependants' expenses. As of 2025–2026, the minimum living cost requirement is around AUD $29,710 per year for a single student (updated regularly — check the latest on homeaffairs.gov.au). Evidence includes bank statements, loans, scholarships, or sponsor declarations.

English Language Proficiency

Unless exempt (e.g., from certain English-speaking countries or prior English-medium study), you'll need a test score:

• IELTS: Overall 5.5 (or 5.0 with ELICOS package)
• PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge, OET also accepted (equivalent scores apply)

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Mandatory for the full visa period — arrange this before applying.

Health and Character

You may need a health examination and police clearances from every country you've lived in for 12+ months since age 16.

If Your Application Is Refused

A refusal letter will explain the reasons (often GS concerns, finances, or credibility). Offshore applicants usually have no review rights — you'd need to re-apply with stronger evidence.

Onshore applicants may appeal to the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART, successor to AAT) within 21 days (or 7 days in some cases) if eligible.

South Australia-Specific Notes

Adelaide remains a popular, welcoming study destination — lower living costs than Sydney or Melbourne, strong universities, and a vibrant student community. 

South Australian institutions often have good post-study work pathways, especially in priority sectors like health, engineering, IT, and education. If you're studying in SA, highlight how the course aligns with local opportunities or your long-term plans — this can strengthen your GS case.
